The list
Dear Reader,
This blog will be slightly different from our previous posts. Today you will take part of the list informing you about things you did not really know you needed to know.
1. Least expected snack?
Cherry hearts with unknown topping, which ended up in us doing a lot of spitting!
2. Most useful phrase?
English
That’s too much! This regards all prices given to us. In Tanzania life’s bargaining.
Swahili
Poa, kashisi kamandizi which means "cool, crazy as a banana". Unexpected but very useful.
Swedish
De undrar om det finns en valvakare? This was said by the receptionist working at the swedish embassy when we tried to find out whether there was any elections analysis to attend.
Norwegian
Tar docke icke daladallan? Said by some Norwegian girls regarding us taking a cab and not the local daladala buses.
Vi venter oss den förste ven vi fått med hjelp av den norske stat. A travesty on the movie Elling said by us after a meeting at the Norwegian embassy where we were promised some contacts.
3 Favourite food?
Chines, Indian, Dar es Salaam is a city with loads of influences from both east, west and Africa.
4 Favourite drink?
Stoney Tangawizi and Serengeti. Stoney Tangawizi is a ginger soda which is rather spicy and always out of stock. Serengeti is a local beer, that doesn’t contain corn, something that is the current praxis among beer brewers down here.
5 Most common food?
Beans and rice, Beans and chapati, Beans and ugali. Brown beans is a very common dish down here, it is good value and has a high nutritional content. Amen!
6 Funniest foods?
Addis in Dar, a huge pancake that’s used as a plate and as knife and fork. Served along with even more pan-cakes rolled up like bandage rolls. Indescribable!
7 Most bought paper?
Toilet paper and various local news papers.
8 Favourite taxi driver?
Valencio aka Valle, the guy working at our place. Not always a good value, but always a laugh and not to mentioned he knows how to find places.
9 Fashion you don’t want to see again?
Breast hanging down covering/holding the upper part of the skirt!
10 Favourite music?
Bongo flavour, Swahili music very popular down here. Jay Z, not yet!
11 Favourite beach?
Bongoyo island or Kipipeo, two lovely beaches. Just see some of the pictures below.
12 Best hairdresser?
To be evaluated, you know things grow very good in a warm, sunny and humid climate.
13 Most called number?
Celtels (one of the local mobile operators) helpdesk until that phone got lost
14 Three names Lars has started to take notice of:
Lurch
Rollies
Roys
15 Favourite clothes?
Short sleeved suite, Jonas was on the fashion trail earlier today and tried out a lovely out-fit. Very African, the clerks tried to convince J that "Leonardo di Vency" was an Italian brand, that’s also very African.
16 What is the last thing you would like right now?
That Hulda should call and threat us with the police. Hulda want us to pay loads of dollars for some kind of permit, for the moment we don’t intend to do so… If Lariam (Jonas malaria prophylaxis) won’t result in nightmares, she will!
17 Favourite quote?
"Director X. is not in at the moment, he is out hunting, could you call back in half an hour?" Enough said.
18 Largest hand you ever shaken?
The Zantel bear, if we say that latrine lids are large in Sweden the African ones are even larger. (Must be due to the average ass size down here)
19 What do you whish happened tonight?
That we didn’t have to pee at 5am. Getting out of the mosquito tent is nothing but great fuzz.
20 Favourite thing brought from Sweden?
Flash drive (sort of gadget used for storing data files) and guide books. Guide books are often very good but not always reliable or trustworthy.
21 Some persons we would like to do this test.
-The mamas at YWCA
-mama Kabadi
-Our guards
-you guys and gals who read this. Please do so and send your results to us for analysis, or if you have an own weblogg please feel free to cut and paste from this! If we get loads of answers we could consider doing a quantitative analysis.
Have a good weekend, that's at least our ambition. On monday we will start the interviewing, probably another blast for the two of us!
Cheers,
Jonas&Lars
